"Wheel to Walk" pit-stops in T.O
Listen to CFRB's Cheryl Camack.
It’s a journey of incredible strength and endurance. In their “Wheel to Walk” campaign, four paraplegic men are hand-cycling across the country to raise money to fund research for cures for spinal cord injuries.
In 2006 a research team at McMaster University, headed by Dr. Michel Rathbourne, successfully transplanted cells from a rats intestine into its spinal cord. The transplanted cells were stimulated the injured spinal cord to produce and grow cells insulating the damaged nerve fibres.
Looking for a cure to enable them to walk again, Charles Cetinski, Chuck Mealing, Les McLaughlin, and Harvey Uppal, are hoping to raise $10 million to fund research into the human-viability of this procedure.
The cyclists began their journey on the 10th June in Victoria British Columbia, and are planning to finish the over 10 000 km trek around the 4th of September in St. John’s Newfoundland.
“Canada has been a leader in the past; with the first flight, penicillin, and the telephone, lets put spinal cord injuries under our belt,” says 65-year old hand-cyclist Charles Cetinski.
There asking for every Canadian to donate 30 cents to help make wheelchairs history.
